When you attempt to modify your Startup and Recovery settings on the Advanced tab of the System Properties dialog box, you may receive the following error message:
Please enter a value between 0 and 999 seconds.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because you have manually modified your Boot.ini file so that the timeout parameter is equal to "-1".
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, close the error message window, and then continue. With this workaround you can modify the Startup and Recovery section without changing your timeout setting.
NOTE: If you click OK after you receive the error message, you are forced to choose a timeout value.

In a multi-start environment, you can set the amount of time that Windows waits before it automatically starts the default operating system. This delay is set to 30 seconds by default. This delay can be set to any value that is between 0 and 999 seconds.
To set your startup screen to wait indefinitely, you can manually set the timeout value in the Boot.ini file to "-1". However, the next time you access the Startup and Recovery section, you are prompted to choose an alternate value.
