SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Visio, the Visio Installation Manager may not install all the required files. The installation may appear to be complete, but Visio does not start. Visio is not added to the Start menu, and Visio32.exe is not copied to the hard disk.

The Visio Installation Manager may also quit unexpectedly. You may receive one of the following error messages:
Installation Manager was interrupted
Installation Manager ended prematurely

RESOLUTION

Use the one of following methods to complete the installation of Visio.

Method 1: Repair - Restore to original installation state

To repair an incomplete installation, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Visio, and then click Change.
  4. In the Microsoft Visio Professional Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair - Restore to original installation state, and then click Next.
  5. Follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard to complete the installation. If this does not resolve the problem, follow the steps in Method 2.

Method 2: Re-install Visio from the CD-ROM

If Microsoft Visio is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, you can reinstall Visio from the CD-ROM. To reinstall Visio, follow these steps:
  1. Temporarily quit any virus scanning software you are currently using.
  2. On the Visio CD-ROM, locate the Vba6.msi file. This file is typically located in the \Install\bin\sp\VBA folder.
  3. Right-click Vba6.msi, and then click Uninstall.
  4. Right-click Vba6.msi, and then click Install.
  5. On the Visio CD-ROM, locate the Spcore.msi file. This file is typically located in the \Install\bin\sp\Spcore folder.
  6. Right-click Spcore.msi, and then click Uninstall.
  7. Right-click Spcore.msi, and then click Install.

Note This is a quiet installation and it runs without any prompts. Wait about 30 seconds for it to complete.
  8. On the Visio CD-ROM, locate the Setup.msi file that is located in the \Install\bin\sp\Vim folder.
  9. Right-click Setup.msi, and then click Install.
The Visio Installation Manager (VIM) starts the installation process. If this does not resolve the problem, follow the steps that are listed in Method 3.

Method 3: Remove Visio and then install

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. To remove Visio 2000, follow these steps:

  2. To resolve this issue, run the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings, and then reinstall Visio. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Download, install, and then run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings associated with your products installation. For additional information about how to download, install, and use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    2. To use the Windows CleanUp utility, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Installer Clean Up.
      2. Select the program that you want to remove, and then click Remove.
      3. Click OK, and then click Exit.
Note Because the Windows Installer CleanUp utility removes Windows Installer related registry settings and not the program files, make sure that you install your program in the same folder it was originally installed in to prevent duplication of files on your hard disk.
  3. This utility may make it necessary to reinstall other programs, and Microsoft advises caution. Only remove Visio or Visio solutions.

The following is a combined list of all MSI (Microsoft Installer) files that Visio Standard Edition, Visio Technical Edition, Visio Professional Edition, and Visio Enterprise Edition could install onto your system. Remove Visio and the solutions that are applicable:
