NetBIOS Sessions May Be Dropped in Windows 2000 (285803)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a computer running Windows 2000, an existing connection may be dropped when you attempt to make a second connection from the same computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the second connection attempt disconnects the first while the first session setup is authenticating the user.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.

In a network trace, there is a session setup command server message block (SMB) followed by a Negotiate Dialect SMB on a second session setup. When the first session is disconnected, the network trace contains a reset. The Negotiate Dialect SMB must be received by the server before the response to the session setup is received.
