SideWinder: Cannot Install Game Controller Software to a Removable Disk (285794)

When you attempt to install the Microsoft SideWinder Game Controller software, you may receive the following error message:
Setup cannot install to a floppy or removable drive. Please choose a destination directory on your fixed drive.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you attempt to install the SideWinder Game Controller software to a removable hard disk.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, install the SideWinder Game Controller software to a fixed hard disk in your computer.
You may be able to work around this issue by changing the properties of the removable hard disk.
To do this:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the Device Manager tab, click View devices by type.
- Double-click Disk Drives.
- Click the removable disk on which you want to install the software, and then click Properties.
- On the Settings tab, click to clear the Removable check box, and then click OK.
- Click Close, and then restart your computer.
- Run the SideWinder Game Controller Setup program.
- Repeat steps 1 through 6, except in step 5, click to select the Removable check box.
