SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office XP, when you click a picture clip in the Microsoft Clip Organizer, an arrow appears to the right of the clip. When you click the arrow, and then click Open Clip In, the Open With dialog box appears, prompting you to choose a program to open the clip. If you click Clip Organizer, and then click Always use this program to open these files, Clip Organizer is registered as the default program for clip files (with a .wmf file extension).

However, after you do this, and then click Open Clip In, Clip Organizer starts, but does not open the clip that you selected. The clip does not appear in your Favorites folder.

WORKAROUND

If you want to preview the clip, click Preview/Properties on the clip menu.

If you want to add the clip to your Favorites folder, click Copy to collection, select the Favorites folder, and then click OK.

See the "More Information" section of this article for other commands available on the clip menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Open Clip In

The Open Clip In command opens the clip in a program that has been associated with the clip. To change the program clips are associated with, follow these steps: NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
  3. Click the type of document you want to re-associate, and then click Change.
  4. Select the program you would like to use to open this file type in the future.
  5. Click OK.NOTE: Some programs, such as Microsoft Word, associate multiple extensions with a file type. For example, a Microsoft Word document is associated by default with both a .doc and an .rtf file extension. This can cause problems if you want to change the program that opens a particular file.

To re-associate a file type with a program under these conditions, you must delete all extensions registered to that program, and then re-associate each file type with a program. In addition, you must redefine the Open, Print, and DDE commands for each file type. To do this, in My Computer or Windows Explorer, click Options on the View menu, and then click the File Type tab.
