SUMMARY

This article describes how to remove recently used templates from the Most Recently Used (MRU) list at the bottom of the File menu, and from the New from template list in the New Presentation task pane.

Back Up the PowerPoint Registry Settings

  1. Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
  2. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
  3. Click to expand the following subkey in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\PowerPoint

    NOTE: The preceding registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.

  4. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.

    Notice that the Export Registry File dialog box appears.
  5. In the File name box, type C:\Export to PowerPoint, and then click Save.

To Remove a Template from the MRU List

To Remove an entry from the MRU list, you need to delete the filenumber data value, and then make sure that the remaining values are in proper numeric order.

NOTE: You must back up the registry settings as explained above in the "Back Up the PowerPoint Registry Settings" section before removing templates from the MRU list. The following steps begin where the back-up steps left off:
  1. Click the Recent File List subkey of the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\PowerPoint

  2. In the Name list, click Filenumber, where Filenumber corresponds to the template file in the Data list that you want to remove.

    NOTE: The values in the Name list are displayed in numeric order.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then in the Confirm Value Delete message box, click Yes.
  4. Rename any values in the Name list that are not in numeric order. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the Name list, right-click the value that you want to rename.
    2. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Rename.
    3. Edit the number at the end of Filenumber to place the values in numeric order.

      NOTE: The list should appear similar to the following:
         Name        Data
         (Default)   {value not set}
         File1       "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Templates\mytemplate.pot"
         File2       "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Templates\mytemplate2.pot"
         File3       "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Templates\mytemplate3.pot"
      						

To Remove a Template from the Templates List in the Task Pane

To remove a template from the templates list in the task pane, you need to remove the template's friendly name value, listed as friendlynumber, and also remove the corresponding template location value, listed as templatenumber, from the registry, and then make sure that the remaining values are properly numbered.

NOTE: You must back up the registry settings as listed above in the "Back Up the PowerPoint Registry Settings" section before removing templates from the MRU list. The following steps begin where the back-up steps left off:
  1. Click the Recent Templates subkey of the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\PowerPoint

  2. In the Name list, click the Templatenumber value that corresponds to the template in the Data list that you want to remove.

    NOTE: The values in the Name list are displayed in alphanumeric order.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then in the Confirm Value Delete message box, click Yes.
  4. Click the Friendlynumber value that has the same number as that of the Templatenumber value that you removed in step c of the previous section.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then in the Confirm Value Delete message box, click Yes.
  6. Rename any values in the Name list that are not in alphanumeric order. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the Name list, right-click the value that you want to rename.
    2. On the shortcut menu that appears, click Rename.
    3. Edit the number at the end of Friendlynumber or of Templatenumber to place the values in alphanumeric order.

      NOTE: The list should appear similar to the following:
         Name        Data
         (Default)   {value not set}
         Friendly1   ""
         Friendly2   "Cliff.pot"
         Template1   "C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Templates\mytemplate1.pot"
         Template2   "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\Presentation    Designs\Cliff.pot"
      						
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.
