PUB2002: Publication Saved as RTF Does Not Retain All Formatting (285389)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q285389

SYMPTOMS

When you save a publication as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file type , you will see the following message:
The File type you selected only supports text. To save only the text of this publication, click OK. To save the entire publication, Click Cancel, and then choose the Publisher (.pub) file type.
If you click OK, quit Publisher, and then open the publication in Microsoft Word, the positional formatting in the publication has been lost. The sections in the publication are each full-width and horizontally separated.

CAUSE

Rich Text Formatting (RTF) is used when you need to take information from a publication to a different program that can import an .rtf file, such as a word processing program. These programs are not able to display text frames and other elements unique to Publisher, so those elements are not converted. Only text and some text formatting are converted in the RTF process. RTF is used to transfer text, not document layout information.

MORE INFORMATION

To save a publication as an RTF file, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save as type box, click Rich Text Format (*.rtf), or click Word 97-2002 & 6.0/95-RTF.
