This article was previously published under Q285363 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Publisher 2002, when you use the Image control color setting Washout on an image or graphic, and then change the color setting to Black and White, the image disappears.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because changes made to an image are cumulative; that is, new changes are added to old changes that you have made. When you use Washout on an image, the colors of the image are lightened. When you change the Image control color setting to Black and White, Publisher detects only white, and the image disappears.
For an example of this behavior, follow these steps:
- Start Publisher.
- Open a blank publication.
- On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click From file.
- In the Insert Picture dialog box, select an image from your files, and then click Insert.
- Make sure that the focus is on the image.
- On the Format menu, click Picture.
- In the Format Picture dialog box, click the Picture tab.
- On the Picture tab, select Washout in the Color list under Image control, and then click OK.
Notice that the image is now washed out (lightened). - On the Format menu, click Picture.
- In the Format Picture dialog box, click the Picture tab.
- On the Picture tab, select Black and White in the Color list under Image control, and then click OK.
Notice that the image disappears.
NOTE: Click the Reset Picture icon on the Picture toolbar to make the image reappear.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, reset the image to its original state, and then change the color setting to Black and White. To reset the image, follow these steps:
- On the Format menu, click Picture.
- Click the Picture tab if it is not already selected.
- Click Reset, and then click OK.
