SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to drag a picture or other graphic object into a Microsoft Publisher publication, the picture may be changed into a text box that contains nonsensical characters.

You receive no warning or error message when this behavior occurs.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when there is no disk space (or nearly none) remaining on the disk on which Publisher is installed. Because the image filters are unable to load, Publisher assumes that the objects are text objects, and therefore it creates a text box and imports the picture as text.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you need to create additional space on your hard disk.

Some ways to create additional disk space include the following:
  • Delete the files in the temp (or .tmp) folders.
  • Remove programs that you no longer use.
  • Archive rarely used data files to a removable disk, such a floppy disk, writable compact disc, or a zip disk.
