PRB: MDAC Installation Fails When Registering OCX (285321)

SYMPTOMS

Installation of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.5 or version 2.6 on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer or a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer may fail with one of the following error messages:
Error Registering the OCX C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\OLEAUT32.DLL
Error Registering the OCX C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSADO15.DLL
Error Registering the OCX C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ODBCCONF.DLL
Error Registering the OCX C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSXML2.DLL

CAUSE

The user installing MDAC does not have sufficient permissions to the following registry key and its subkeys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface

The following steps illustrate how to give the current user appropriate permissions to complete the MDAC installation successfully:
  1. Start the Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and select the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface

  3. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
  4. Give the current user (or a group to which the user belongs) Full Control permissions on this key. In Windows NT 4.0, make sure that you select the Replace Permissions on Existing Subkeys checkbox. In Windows 2000, make sure that you select the Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propagate to this object checkbox. Click OK to save your changes.
  5. Quit the Registry Editor.
After you make the changes, you can begin the MDAC installation.
