OFF2000: Error Message: "The Product Is Already Registered on Another Computer" When You Reinstall Office 2000 or Microsoft Project 2000 (285198)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000
  • Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Release 1 (SR-1)

This article was previously published under Q285198

SYMPTOMS

After you reinstall one of the products listed at the beginning of this article by using the Microsoft Registration Wizard, you receive the following error message when you register via the Internet:
The product is already registered on another computer. If you feel this message is in error, try registering again.

CAUSE

In order to associate the relevant copy of your product with the hardware on which it is installed, the Registration Wizard creates a unique hardware identification code. This code is based on the hardware components in the computer and is not based on any personal information of any kind.

If you make any significant changes to this configuration when you try to register again, the unique identifier for your computer no longer matches the one that is stored in the Microsoft registration records.

RESOLUTION

To reregister your program, please follow these steps:
  1. Start one of the Office programs or Microsoft Project 2000.
  2. Click Telephone in the Offline Registration dialog box of the Office Registration Wizard. This displays the Telephone Registration dialog box of the wizard.

  3. Select your country in the Select your country/region from the list below list.
  4. Call the telephone number displayed in step 2 of this dialog box.
  5. Type the confirmation number provided by the Microsoft representative, and then click Next.
  6. In the last dialog box, note the Confirmation number provided, record it for future reference, and then click Finish.

MORE INFORMATION

The Microsoft End User License Agreement for applications products permits you to install the product on one computer only. If you are the primary user of the product, you can also install one copy on your laptop computer, for your exclusive use only. If you need to install on more than one computer or a qualifying laptop, you must acquire more than one license of the software product. One of the purposes of the Microsoft Registration Wizard is to provide helpful reminders to honest customers to assist them in complying with the license agreement, so that they do not inadvertently install illegal copies.
