This article was previously published under Q285193

SYMPTOMS

When you change the theme, for example, from Underwater to any other theme on a computer that has been upgraded from Microsoft Windows 98 (with the Desktop Themes option installed) to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, you may find that the My Computer, My Network Places, and Recycle Bin icons are still displayed in the Underwater theme.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, either replace the Cool.dll file or manually change each of the icons.

MORE INFORMATION

To replace the Cool.dll file:

Copy the Cool.dll file from the Windows 98 Installation CD-ROM to C:\Windows\System\Cool.dll.

The Cool.dll file contains all the Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0 system icons, but does not include the Windows 2000 icons. You will be using the earlier version of the default icons.

To manually change the icons:
  1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Effects, click My Computer, and then click Change Icon.
  3. Click Browse, locate C:\Windows\Explorer.exe, and then click Open.
  4. Click the fifth icon in the second row, and then click OK.
  5. Click My Network Places, and then click Change Icon.
  6. Click Browse, locate C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll, and then click Open.
  7. Click the first icon, and then click OK.
  8. Click Recycle Bin (full), and then click Change Icon.
  9. Click Browse, locate C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll, and then click Open.
  10. Click the ninth icon in the first row, and then click OK.
  11. Click Recycle Bin (empty), and then click Change Icon.
  12. Click Browse, locate C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll, and then click Open.
  13. Click the eighth icon in the fourth row, and then click OK.
Note: You will need to make these changes every time a theme is changed back to Windows Default.
