Carrier DMI Error Message: 503 Service Not Available (285175)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server

This article was previously published under Q285175

SYMPTOMS

When a push notification (Short Message Service) is sent using the HTTP protocol from a server that is running Microsoft Mobile Information Server Enterprise Edition to a server running Mobile Information Server Carrier Edition, the following response may be returned from the Carrier server.
503 Service not available

CAUSE

The 503 error indicates that the message processor component on the Carrier server (also referred to as Device Message Interconnect or DMI) timed out after waiting one minute for a response from the Short Message Service connector component of the Carrier server. This may be because the Short Message Service connector was unable to establish contact with the carrier's Short Message Service center.

RESOLUTION

The message will be queued up and retried later.

MORE INFORMATION

The Short Message Service Center is the third-party server at the Carrier that is responsible for sending the Short Message Service message to the device. After the message is sent to the Short Message Service center, it has left the Mobile Information Server system.
