Windows 2000 Selects Down-level Domain PDC to Enumerate User and Group Accounts (285074)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q285074

SYMPTOMS

When Object Picker (Objsel.dll) enumerates users, groups, or machine accounts from a down-level domain, the PDC is contacted to provide the list of objects. This may result in poor performance as the list may be obtained over a WAN link and may put unnecessary load on the PDC computer.

CAUSE

The code that made the connection to the down level domain asked for a writable domain controller, although it only reads the domain accounts. Because of that, it always connects to the PDC.
