'Error 797' Message Appears When You Try to Make a Remote Connection Through Dial-up (285049)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to dial a remote connection on a computer running Windows 2000 Professional, you may receive the following error message:

Error 797 the modem could not be found.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the original drivers for the dial-up adapters are not supported under Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, update the drivers.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, click Hardware, and then click Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network Adapters, right-click RAS Async Adapter, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Update Driver.

    Windows will report that the correct driver is already installed and will prompt you to either reinstall the driver or exit.
  5. Click Reinstall.
  6. Run the Dial-up Networking Wizard again.
