This article was previously published under Q284980

SUMMARY

The enhanced Migration Wizard included with Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) permits mailbox migration from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computers in a separate organization to Exchange 2000. The Migration Wizard does not change the Exchange Server 5.5 computer in any way; it just creates a copy of the mailbox. Administrators need to plan not only for new mailbox management on Exchange 2000, but also what to do with the source mailbox left on the Exchange Server 5.5 computers.

MORE INFORMATION

You have several options of what you can do on the Exchange Server 5.5 side:
  • If you have an inter-organizational Active Directory Connector (ADC) configured to create contacts in Exchange Server 5.5, you can delete the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox, and have the inter-organizational ADC create a new contact in the Exchange Server 5.5 organization for the mailbox that has just been migrated.
  • You can delete the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox after migration, and then manually create a new contact. It is recommended that you give the contact an X.500 proxy address that matches the distinguished name of the old mailbox that has been deleted. This will ensure that all mail is directed to the new account. For related information see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • You can create a new contact, leave the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox in place, and set the contact as the alternate recipient. Forward all mail to this alternate recipient.
  • You can leave the Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox, but it will continue to receive mail.
