SYMPTOMS

When you try to establish a Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) connection from a client to a virtual private network (VPN) server that has a certificate from a trusted authority, you may receive error messages and the process does not work.

On the client, you receive the following security log error message:
IKE security association negotiation failed.
Mode: Key Exchange Mode (Main Mode)
Failure Point: Me
Failure Reason: IKE authentication credentials are unacceptable
On the VPN server, you receive the following security log error message:
Trust failed. 2 0

RESOLUTION
