WD2002: "Don't Add Space Between Paragraphs" Formatting Option Is Not Available (284968)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Paragraph on the Format menu, the Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style check box is unavailable (appears shaded) on the Indents and Spacing tab.

When you increase the Spacing value (Before or After), the Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style check box still aapears shaded.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style option is not designed to be used unless you are modifying an existing paragraph style or creating a new paragraph style.

WORKAROUND

To create a paragraph format and use the Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
  2. On the Styles and Formatting pane, click New Style.
  3. On the New Style dialog box, click Format, and then click Paragraph.
  4. Under Spacing, type a value greater than zero in the Before or the After box (or in both). The Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style check box is now available.
To modify an existing paragraph format and use the Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style option, follow these steps:
  1. On the Format menu, click Styles and Formatting.
  2. On the Styles and Formatting pane, right-click the paragraph format that you want to modify, and then click Modify.
  3. On the Modify Style dialog box, click Format, and then click Paragraph.
  4. Under Spacing, type a value greater than zero in the Before or the After box, if required. The Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style check box is now available.
