SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows 2000, and Microsoft Windows XP do not use UseLicenseServer under the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters

This registry entry is used only in Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. The key exists on these Windows installations when Terminal Services are enabled, but it does not serve any function.

MORE INFORMATION

License Manager:

The License Manager tool connects to license servers and displays information about the License Packs installed on the server.

When the program starts, it checks for a command line argument and if one is found, it tries to connect to that server. If it does not find one, it checks to see if a license server is running on the local computer, and if it finds one, it displays the information about it. If there is no license server that is running on the local computer, it checks up the registry for the following entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentcontrolSet\Services\Termservice\Parameters\UseLicenseServer

If this key is set to 1, it tries to connect to the server that is listed in the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentcontrolSet\Services\Termservice\Parameters\DefaultLicenseServer

If this succeeds, the application displays information about this server. If none of the above conditions are met, it displays a dialog box in which the user can type a server name to connect to.

This tool resembles Windows Explorer. It displays the server and license in the left pane in a tree view. The servers, License Packs or Issued Licenses are displayed in the right pane.

In the View menu, you can set the right pane view to display different views by clicking the command Large Icons, Small Icons, List or Details.

The License Server comes with three preinstalled License Packs, which are for:
  • Windows NT 3.51
  • Non Windows NT
  • Windows NT 4.0
The Windows NT 4.0 licenses are free; therefore, the number of licenses in this keypack is unlimited. Licenses can be added to and removed from the other two types of license packs. You can add and remove licenses by clicking License in the Register menu. This menu item is enabled when you select a server either in the tree view or the list view.
