SYMPTOMS

When you view your modem configuration settings on your Compaq Presario computer, your modem may be configured to use COM port 3 (COM3) instead of COM port 2 (COM2).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Compaq Presario computer modems are designed to use COM3 in Windows Millennium Edition (Me), even though COM2 is available.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

The Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver that is installed for the Compaq Presario assigns the modem to COM3.
