ACC2002: Access Quits Unexpectedly When You Click the Edit Menu in Design View of a Data Access Page (284904)

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Edit menu in Design view of a data access page, you receive the following error message, and then Access quits:
Microsoft Access has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Speech Recognition feature in Access is enabled and in Voice Command mode, and you have an ActiveX control either selected or activated.

RESOLUTION

You can avoid this issue by temporarily disabling Speech Recognition before you use the Edit menu. To temporarily disable Speech Recognition, follow these steps:
  1. On the Language bar, click Microphone to turn it off.
  2. Use the Edit menu to make the changes that you want to make.
  3. On the Language bar, click Microphone to turn it back on.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Microsoft Access.
  2. On the File menu, click New.
  3. In the Task pane, click Blank Access Data Page.
  4. In the Select Data Source dialog box, click Cancel.
  5. Make sure that Speech Recognition is turned on and in Voice Command mode.
  6. In the toolbox, click More Controls.
  7. Locate and then click Microsoft Netshow Player.
  8. Draw a Microsoft Netshow Player control on the data access page.
  9. Click the Netshow Player control.
  10. Click the Edit menu. Note that you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
