WD2002: Sound Recorder No Longer Records from Microphone After You Install Speech Recognition (284886)

After you install speech recognition and start Microsoft Word, Microsoft Windows Sound Recorder no longer records sounds from the microphone.
Also, when you start Sound Recorder, you may receive one of the following error messages (or a similar message):
Your audio hardware cannot record into files like the current file. To record, create a new document.
Another application is recording audio. Stop recording with this other application and then try to record with Sound Recorder again.
When you click OK to close the error message, Sound Recorder may or may not record sounds from the microphone, depending on the type of hardware that you are using (sound card, microphone, and so on). The symptoms may vary, depending on the type of hardware that you are using (sound card, microphone, and so on).
CAUSE
This problem occurs because Sound Recorder and speech recognition are both trying to use the microphone.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, save any open files and turn off speech recognition before you use Sound Recorder to record sounds from the microphone.
To turn off speech recognition in Microsoft Word, do one of the following:
- On the Tools menu, click Speech or press WINDOWS+V.
NOTE: When speech is turned on, a check mark appears next to Speech on the Tools menu.

- On the Language bar, click Microphone.
If you do not see the Language bar, it may be minimized. To restore the Language bar, click the Language Indicator (EN when the language is English) in the system tray, and then click Show the Language bar on the shortcut menu that appears.
NOTE: When speech recognition is turned on, the Dictation and Voice Command buttons appear on the Language bar.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
