BUG: Request Forwarder Can Be Enabled Without RfFiltExt.dll (284859)

SYMPTOMS

The Enable Web request forwarding and other check boxes on the Request Forwarder tab in the cluster properties page of Application Center 2000 can be selected and cleared even if the Request Forwarder ISAPI filter (RfFilExt.dll) has been uninstalled. This gives the appearance that the Request Forwarder is working when in fact it is not installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Application Center 2000.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Manually remove the Request Forwarder ISAPI filter. To do so, in Microsoft Management Console (MMC), using the Internet Service Manager snap-in, navigate to the WWW Master Properties. Click the ISAPI Filters tab, select RfFiltExt, and click remove. Click OK to close all open dialog boxes.
  2. Restart Internet Information Services:
    1. Right-click the master IIS node, and then select Restart IIS.
    2. Select Restart Internet Services on x where x is the name of your computer. Click OK.
  3. Inspect Application Center 2000 cluster properties: In the MMC using the Application Center snap-in, go to cluster properties and click the Request Forwarder tab.Result: The Request Forwarder appears to be enabled, but the Request Forwarder ISAPI filter is not installed.

To Install the Request Forwarder ISAPI Filter and ISAPI Extension

  1. Add the Request Forwarder ISAPI filter:
    1. In the MMC using the Internet Service Manager, go to WWW Master Properties, select the ISAPI Filters tab, and click Add. A dialog box with fields of Filter Name and Executable will appear. Fill out the dialog box as described here:
    2. Filter Name: RfFiltExt.
    3. Executable: Browse to X:\Program Files\Microsoft Application Center\RfFilExt.dll where X is the drive letter where Application Center 2000 is installed. Click Open. The filter will have a priority of "* Unknown *". On Filter Properties, click OK. Click OK to close all open dialog boxes.
  2. Restart Internet Information Services:
    1. Right-click the master IIS node, and then select Restart IIS.
    2. Select Restart Internet Services on x, where x is the name of your computer. Click OK.
