SUMMARY

You can use the enhanced Migration Wizard that is included with Exchange 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to migrate from a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer to Exchange 2000 in a separate organization. If the Exchange Server 5.5 administrator has modified the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port that the Exchange Server 5.5 Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) service listens on from the default of 389, you need to specify that port for the Migration Wizard when you migrate to Exchange 2000. Also, instead of having the Migration Wizard list all of the mailboxes on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer as available to migrate, you can specify a single container as the source container.

You need to specify these two options (port number and container) in the Migration Wizard on the Source Exchange 5.5 Server dialog box. To start the Migration Wizard and locate the Source Exchange 5.5 Server dialog box:

On the Exchange 2000 server, click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click Migration Wizard.
Click Next, and then click Migrate from Microsoft Exchange 5.5.
Click Next twice, and then click the appropriate destination server and information store.
Click Next to display the Source Exchange 5.5 Server dialog box. The Source Exchange 5.5 Server dialog box contains the required fields for the Exchange Server 5.5 computer name, the Administrator account, and the password.

There are several cases in which you might need to use these migration options. In most cases, the Exchange Server 5.5 LDAP service listens on the default TCP port 389. If the Exchange Server 5.5 computer is a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that is a domain controller, the Exchange Server 5.5 computer may be listening on LDAP port 379, or another port that is different than the default TCP port 389. In this case, instead of typing only the Exchange Server 5.5 computer name in the Exchange 5.5 server name box, type the server name, a colon, and then the port number, for example:

server_name:379

If you want to migrate only a certain organizational unit (OU) from the source Exchange Server 5.5 computer, type the path to the OU after the server name, separated by forward slashes. For example, you can type the following in the Exchange 5.5 server name box:

server_name/o=Microsoft/ou=Swimmer/cn=SourceContainer

You can use these two options together. If you want to migrate only a certain OU from the source Exchange Server 5.5 computer, and the Exchange Server 5.5 LDAP service is listening on a port other than the default of 389, type the path to the container, followed by the port number:
