OL2002: Error Message Reports 'Operation Failed' and Internet Connection Wizard Appears When You Click 'Outlook Today' (284311)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Outlook Today in a new installation of Outlook 2002, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Outlook: The operation failed
Then the Internet Connection Wizard appears.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer is not yet configured to connect to the Internet.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, start Internet Explorer, and then use the Internet Connection Wizard to configure Internet Explorer before you start Outlook 2002.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
