OL2002: Exchange Client Cannot Open Messages with Outlook 2002 Also Installed (284309)

SYMPTOMS

When you have Exchange Client version 5.0 and Outlook 2002 on the same computer and start Outlook 2002, you are prompted to upgrade the Exchange Client program. After you upgrade the Exchange Client program and then try to open a message, the program may either stop responding (hang) or crash, and you may receive the following error messages:
Crash in Exchng32
Microsoft Exchange: The item could not be displayed. The action could not be completed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Outlook 2002 installation overwrites some of the Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) files, causing the Exchange client program to crash.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
