OL2002: Windows Stops Responding When You Open a Large Message (284307)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q284307

SYMPTOMS

When you are connected to your Microsoft Exchange server with a slow dial-up connection and you try to open a large message in Microsoft Outlook (for example, 1 megabyte (MB) using a 28.8 modem), it may appear that Microsoft Windows has stopped responding. All Outlook related windows fail to refresh. Your desktop remains in this state until the message has finished loading, at which time your desktop and Windows properly refresh.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook is waiting for the remote procedure calls (RPCs) to return.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, wait for the message to finish loading.
