This article was previously published under Q284305 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade from Microsoft Outlook 98 to Outlook 2002, all members of the imported distribution lists appear as new contacts. Deleting any contact also deletes that person from distribution lists.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because, during the upgrade, Outlook 2002 automatically creates new contacts from information in the imported distribution lists and then links those contacts to the distribution list entries. Therefore, when you delete a contact, you also delete that person's information from the distribution list.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, modify the information in the distribution list to make the "distribution list member" different from the "contact" and break the link between them. You can then delete the contact without losing information in the distribution list.
You can also manually add a deleted member back to the distribution list.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
In Outlook 98, distribution lists can have members that are not also contacts. It is a good idea to save the Outlook 98 personal Address Book (.pab) file before you make any changes to the contacts, in case you need to refer to the original lists.
