Restore Process Does Not Delete Existing Workspace Virtual Directories (284017)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001

This article was previously published under Q284017

SYMPTOMS

When a SharePoint Portal Server backup image is restored, virtual directories are created in Internet Services Manager for all workspaces present in the Backup image. However, any additional virtual roots that were already present on the recovery server are not deleted. The virtual roots that were not present in the backup image will not be functional.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the orphaned virtual directory or directories.

MORE INFORMATION

Although leaving the orphaned virtual directory will not affect server performance, if you try to create a new workspace that has the same name as the orphaned virtual directory, it will fail because the name is already in use.
