Search does not resolve localhost to the server name (283912)

SYMPTOMS

If you create a content source for a URL that contains "localhost", (for example, http://localhost/site), and then create a site path rule that refers to the same site, but you use the actual server name instead of localhost, for example http://servername/site/subdir, the site path rule may not be applied.

You may experience the same symptoms if you use the server name in the content source path, but use localhost in a site path rule.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. The indexer processes URLs and not IP addresses. Localhost is a different URL than the one that contains the server name, and is treated differently for indexing purposes.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either localhost or the server name consistently. If your server has multiple host names, you should always use the server name.
