Previously Uninstalled Printers May Appear in the Windows XP Upgrade Report (283664)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q283664

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer to Microsoft Windows XP, the upgrade report lists incompatible drivers for Hewlett-Packard printers and it recommends that you uninstall those devices prior to the upgrade.

Some instances of Hewlett-Packard printer drivers, which you uninstalled prior to the upgrade, may continue to show up as an installed device in the upgrade report.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because when you uninstall the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet, the Hpkfm15.dll file is not removed from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Drivers\W32x86 folder. Windows XP checks for the existence of this file before the upgrade, and if the file resides on the computer, it is flagged in the upgrade report.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The upgrade report is designed to inform you of device drivers that are not compatible with Windows XP, and that the device may not function when Setup completes. The report does not, however, block Setup from continuing the installation.

After the completion of Setup, contact the printer manufacturer for an updated, compatible printer driver.
