This article was previously published under Q283592

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the NTBackup utility from the command line, NTBackup may not start, and no error message appears. Event Viewer logs Event 8017 and cites NTBackup as the source.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if a command line option is misspelled or does not exist. Windows XP logs the event in the Event Viewer as an error instead of displaying a dialog box to notify you that the command was typed incorrectly.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
