Active Directory Connector does not replicate object with event ID 8285 (283275)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q283275

SYMPTOMS

The Active Directory Connector (ADC) may not replicate mailboxes over to Active Directory when the replication logging level is turned up (to at least Medium). In addition, the following event ID message may be logged in the Application event log:

Event ID: 8285 Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSADC
Event Category: Replication
Description:
ADC will not replicate from Exchange Server 5.5 DN of mailbox to "Windows 2000 X500 DN of User" because both objects are not mailbox enabled. The source object is a mailbox. The target object is either a Contact or a mail enabled user. If this is a problem, consider making the Connection Agreement an Inter-Organizational Connection Agreement. (Connection Agreement Name of User CA #####)

CAUSE

If the ADC finds certain attributes on a user, the ADC does not overwrite these attributes. The following attributes can cause the ADC to fail:
  • Attributes added when you create a mailbox:
    • homeMDB:
    • legacyExchangeDN:
    • mailNickname:
    • homeMTA:
    • msExchHomeServerName:
    • msExchMailboxGuid:
    • msExchMailboxSecurityDescriptor:
    • mDBUseDefaults:
  • Attributes added by the Recipient Update Service:
    • mail:
    • proxyAddresses:
    • showInAddressBook:
    • textEncodedORAddress:
    • msExchUserAccountControl:
    • msExchALObjectVersion:
    • msExchPoliciesIncluded:

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove any attributes that are listed in the preceding section. When you remove these attributes, the two problem objects link.

Note When you remove these attributes, the user is no longer mail-enabled.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
