Error Message Occurs When You Use the Add Network Place Wizard (283190)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Add Network Place Wizard to add a network place, you may receive the following error message:
The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you typed only the server name (\\servername) in the Location box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, type the server and share name in the Location box in the following format:

\\servername\sharename

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

In Microsoft Windows 2000, when you use the Add Network Place Wizard, type the server name, and then click Next, a list of available shares on that server is displayed. This feature has been changed in Windows XP. To see a list of available shares, type the server name, and then click Browse.
