Indexing Service Searches That Use Date Strings Return Unexpected Results (283163)

When you search for strings that are interpreted as dates by the Indexing service in Windows 2000 may return unexpected results. For example, a search for Jan12345 may also return hits for Jan67890.
CAUSE
This problem can occur because numbers such as 12345 and 56789 are interpreted as year values. The Infosoft.dll dynamic-link library file checks whether the year has 4 digits. If the year has 4 digits, Infosoft.dll leaves the year as it is. The problem is that for more than 4 digits, Infosoft.dll puts 0000 as the year value. Because there is no day value, it is set to 00 for both Jan12345 and Jan56789, and November gives the same month values and 0000 value results for the year because both are 5 digits.

STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
