PPT2002: Default Blank Presentation Does Not Automatically Open After You Upgrade PowerPoint (283148)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 from PowerPoint 2000, when you start PowerPoint 2002, the custom default blank presentation that you created and used with PowerPoint 2000 does not automatically open.

The custom blank presentation file, Blank Presentation.pot, is still located in the users template folder. When you open the presentation manually, it opens as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because PowerPoint 2002 uses the file name Blank.pot as the custom blank presentation instead of Blank Presentation.pot, as was used in PowerPoint 2000 and earlier versions of PowerPoint.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the name of the Blank Presentation.pot file to Blank.pot. To change the name of the the file follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  2. Browse to find Blank Presentation.pot (normally located at C:\\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates).
  3. Right-click Blank Presentation.pot.
  4. On the shortcut menu, click Rename.
  5. Type Blank.pot, and then press the ENTER key.
