Volume Snapshot May Not Work but You Do Not Receive an Error Message (283085)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q283085 SYMPTOMS
In Windows XP, when you run Backup in Volume Snapshot mode, if the volume snapshot is not successfully snapped, Backup may not report to the console that the volume snapshot did not succeed. In this instance, Backup reverts to non-snapshot mode for the current backup.
Although you do not receive an error message, if you look in the Backup log file, you see an error similar to the following one:
Error returned while snapping the volume:8004230f
Reverting to Non-snap backup mode.
CAUSE
This problem may occur because:
- You successfully backed up all files, even though the snapshop was not successful.
- You backed up the volume that stores the backup file.
- The shim driver stopped responding.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
In Windows XP, you can create snapshot backups of volumes with exact point-in-time copies of files including all open files. For example, a volume snapshot backup can back up databases that are held open exclusively as well as files that are open due to operator or computer activity.
