WD2002: DocVariable Field Displays Box Symbol in Table Cell (283025)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q283025

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2002, when you insert a DocVariable field into a table cell, and the document variable you specify contains a carriage return character, a box symbol appears rather than the expected paragraph mark.

WORKAROUND

Click in the table cell after the DocVariable field and press ENTER one time. The carriage return in the field will display correctly as a paragraph mark. However, this will create an extra line in the table cell. To prevent this extra line from showing, specify an exact row height. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click in the table cell containing the DocVariable field.
  2. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.
  3. Click the Row tab.
  4. Click to select the Specify height check box.
  5. In the Specify height box, type or select the row height you want to use. As a general rule, use 0.2 inch for each line of text in the cell formatted with a 12-point font size, or about 0.17 inch for each line of text formatted with a 10-point font size.
  6. In the Row height is box, select Exactly.
  7. Click OK to apply the row height.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
