WD2000: Input Method Editor from Office 2000 Proofing Tools Kit Fails to Install with Setup Error (282942)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Input Method Editor (IME) from the Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools Kit (PTK) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you receive the following error message:
Setup cannot continue. You need to restart Windows to continue the installation. After you have restarted Windows, run setup again.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools Kit.
  2. In your Web browser, browse to the following Microsoft Web site:
  3. Select Microsoft Global IME 5.x for Japanese - with language pack, and then click Next.

    NOTE: Select this option because you already installed the Office Proofing Tools.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Browse to the following Microsoft Web site to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1: NOTE: You can select Custom Installation and choose the Multilanguage Support for the language that you want.
  6. Install the downloaded package, and then restart your computer. You should see a language icon whenever you open a program that supports the use of the Japanese IME.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
