Document Is Not Printed After You Restart an MS-DOS Print Job (282891)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

This article was previously published under Q282891

SYMPTOMS

When a print job is submitted to a printer that has a target print port of "print to file" and then you restart the print job from the printer folder, the print job displays a "Restarting" status. The job never restarts and remains in the queue.

RESOLUTION

This is expected behavior since the operator initially defined the name of the file when the print job was submitted. Since the file already exists when you "restart" the job, the spooler is unable to create the file until the previous file is removed. You can cancel the job if it's in a "restarting" condition, then resubmit the job with a different file name. To delete the print job, right-click the print job, and then click Cancel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
