CAUSE
This problem occurs when the numbered list is formatted with either a custom style or a built-in style that contains numbering.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Restart the Numbering in the Pasted Numbered List
To restart the numbering in the pasted list, right-click the incorrectly numbered item, and then click to select Restart Numbering on the shortcut menu that appears.
NOTE: You may need to restart numbering on several numbered list items before the list is numbered correctly.
Method 2: Do Not Apply a Custom or Built-in Numbered Style
To prevent this problem, do not use a custom style or a built-in style that is formatted with numbering. Instead, manually apply numbering to your list.
To apply numbering to a list, do one of the following:
- After typing your list, select it and then click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click to select the type of numbering you want, and then click OK.
-or- - After typing your list, select it and then click Numbering on the Formatting toolbar.
NOTE: If the Formatting toolbar is not displayed, click Toolbars on the View menu, and then click to select Formatting.
-or- - As you type your original list, also type the number of the first list item. All list items after the first will be automatically numbered in sequence.
NOTE: If the second and remaining items of your list are not automatically numbered, turn on the Automatic numbered lists option. To do this, follow these steps:- On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
- On the AutoFormat As You Type tab, click to select the Automatic numbered lists check box, and then click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
