XCCC: Error Message Occurs When You Run the LAST Command for POP3 in Exchange 2000 (282400)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) client to connect to an Exchange 2000 computer using POP3, and you run the last command, you may receive the following error message:
-ERR Protocol error

CAUSE

This issue can occur because support for the last command is not enabled in Exchange 2000 by default.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, enable support for the last command:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3Svc\Parameters

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: Compatibility
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Hexadecimal
    Value data: fffffffb

  4. Quit Registry Editor.
