SYMPTOMS

The Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 4 (SP4) message transfer agent (MTA) may stop unexpectedly with a call stack that is similar to the following:

When the MTA stops, it logs an error message that is similar to the following:
Event ID: 9405
An unexpected error has occurred which may cause the MTA to terminate. Error: Access violation (0xc0000005) at Address 0x4b5e39 reading from 0x0. [BASE XFER-IN 20] (16)

CAUSE

This problem can occur if an Exchange Server 5.5 SP4 MTA on which message tracking is enabled attempts to process a message with a distinguished name that contains the following string:

DDA:

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn off message tracking to continue to process mail effectively.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 Service Pack 4.
