SYMPTOMS

Because of security implications, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition does not automatically create the drive letter$, or Admin$ special shared folders.

In other versions of Windows, the drive letter$ and Admin$ special shared folders are created by default. The drive letter$ special shared folder allows the administrator to connect to the root directory of a drive. The Admin$ special shared folder is a resource that the computer uses during remote administration of a computer.
