XL2002: Multiple Ranges Contain the Same Title (282147)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2002

This article was previously published under Q282147

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to specify edit ranges to allow users access to parts of a protected worksheet, some of the ranges may unexpectedly have the same title.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the ranges were renamed with a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications subprocedure. No error message is generated when a range is renamed to the same title as an existing range by using the Visual Basic for Applications AllowEditRanges property.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Excel.
  2. Open the workbook.
  3. If the sheet is protected, on the Tools menu, click Protection, click Unprotect Sheet, type the password, and then click OK.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Protection, and then click Allow Users to Edit Ranges.
  5. Select an edit range that has a duplicate title, click Modify, change the title, and then click OK. Repeat this step until all the edit ranges have unique titles.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
