Site Replication Service (SRS) provides directory interoperability between Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange 2000 Server. SRS is built on and runs on a computer that is running Exchange 2000 Server. SRS is essentially a modified Exchange Server 5.5 directory, and uses Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to communicate to both Active Directory and the Exchange Server 5.5 directory. SRS interacts with Exchange Server 5.5-based computers as if it is another Exchange Server 5.5-based computer that is a configuration and recipients replication partner.

SRS is installed by default when the first Exchange 2000-based server joins an Exchange Server 5.5 site. After it is created, SRS cannot be moved to a different server even in the same mixed site. The prime reason for this behavior is that SRS is a hidden, enhanced Exchange Server 5.5 directory and it is server specific.

To achieve the results that you would get if you moved SRS to a different server without moving SRS, follow these steps:

1. Create a new SRS component on a different Exchange 2000-based server in the same mixed site. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2. After the new SRS component is created, verify that the new SRS component is fully operational, and ensure interoperability between Exchange Server 5.5-based computers and Exchange 2000-based servers.
3. When you have ensured that the new SRS component is functioning correctly, you should consider deleting the the original SRS from the Exchange 2000-based server.
