Visual Studio 6.0 Application Compatibility Script Does Not Work Unless Visual C++ Is Installed (281999)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 with a customized script, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to retrieve Visual Studio 6.0 installation location from the registry. Verify that Visual Studio 6.0 has already been installed and run this script again.
After you receive this error message, Setup quits.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because scripts cannot install sub-components, they can only run standard installations such as Typical Installation.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, choose Typical Installation when you install Visual Studio 6.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
