Autodial Does Not Run When You Access the Internet (281969)

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to your computer, and attempt to access the Internet, Autodial may not run. This problem can occur if all the following conditions exist:

Your computer is equipped with a modem, but not a network adapter.
The dial-up connection was created by using an administrator account.
The modem uses the Unimodem driver.
The administrator account has never been used to complete an action that would cause Autodial to run.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem if you have created a dial-up connection by using an administrator account, you can cause it to work for other users by completing the following procedure:

Restart the computer, and then log on with an administrator account.
At a command prompt, ping an Internet host name to cause Autodial to run. For example, ping www.host name.com.
Log off, and then log on by using any valid account. Autodial should now work correctly.
