SYMPTOMS

By default, the System Monitor (SysMon) tool displays multiple processes with the same name, such as:

Process#1
Process#2
Process#3

In Windows XP, there is a feature to display these processes with the Microsoft Product Identification Code (PID) attached to the name, such as Process_(PID).

This feature can be turned on and turned off if you modify the registry:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
  2. Locate the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\PerfProc\Performance

    NOTE: The preceding registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability.

  3. Click the Performance key, click New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value. New Value #1 should be displayed in the Performance registry key.
  4. Right-click New Value #1, left-click Rename, and then rename the value to ProcessNameFormat.
  5. Right-click ProcessNameFormat, and then left-click Modify on the window that is displayed. The Edit DWORD Value window should be displayed. Enter the appropriate number in the Data value field and click OK.

    Value: Set to 1 - To disable PID data (default)
    Value: Set to 2 - To enable PID data

  6. Quit Registry Editor.
CAUTION: If you enable this feature, you may not be able to monitor process-specific information from third-party utilities, or custom-made programs.
