IBM ThinkPad 240x Detects and Installs Joystick Port (281787)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional
This article was previously published under Q281787 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade an IBM ThinkPad 240x to Windows XP, a gameport joystick is detected and installed even though a joystick port is not present on this laptop model.
CAUSE
The Windows Driver Model (WDM) audio driver for the Crystal CS4281 PCI audio device always enumerates a gameport joystick as a child device. This behavior is known to occur on IBM ThinkPad 240x notebooks even though it does not have a gameport connector.
RESOLUTION
For an updated driver for the IBM ThinkPad 240x Crystal CS4281 PCI audio
device, see the IBM Web site at:

The generic driver is working as designed and will install the joystick.
The hardware does not provide a way to detect whether a joystick is present. Many notebooks may have a joystick port present when the system is docked. The Wdma_cwr.inf file controls if the joystick port is installed. IBM has a custom Wdma_cwr.inf file for the Crystal hardware on their default install.
